Miss Handford's Reflections

This week’s theme, ‘Release’, feels particularly fitting as we reach the final week of term. Not, I hope, because anyone in our community identifies with the definition of ‘being set free from confinement’! I certainly would not want our students or staff to see school as something they simply endure until the holidays arrive. However, the summer break does offer us all a welcome sense of release and a chance to step away from the routines of lessons and learning, from the structure of the school day, and perhaps from quite so much homework.

Activities Week has certainly provided opportunities for that release. Our Year 7 residential visit to Lower Grange Farm gave students the chance to connect with one another, challenge themselves and, most importantly, have fun. When I visited on Tuesday morning, the tomahawk throwing seemed a particularly effective way to release some of the stresses and strains that inevitably build up over a busy school year! Likewise, the Year 8 and Year 9 trip to the aqua park was filled with laughter and smiles. The House water fight last week was another chance for everyone to let their hair down and enjoy themselves and judging by the 1000+ water balloons used, it was certainly a great success.

For our Year 11 and Upper Sixth students, the feeling of release is perhaps even more significant. Having worked so hard throughout the year in preparation for their GCSEs and A-levels, waking up each morning without revision hanging over them must feel as though a weight has been lifted. Yet what has been particularly striking is that, despite enjoying their newfound freedom since finishing their examinations, many have chosen not to step away from school entirely. I have been genuinely impressed by the number of students who have continued to give their time to support our community. Whether helping in the library, assisting within the English department, participating in musical events or volunteering in the Prep School, they have demonstrated tremendous generosity and commitment. It has been wonderful to see so many of our older students continuing to contribute over the past few weeks. A testament to the strength of our school community.

As we move into the summer holidays, I hope that all our families are able to pause, relax, recharge and enjoy valuable time together, ready to return refreshed for the year ahead. At the same time, let us not forget the many staff who continue to work tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the summer, ensuring that everything is ready for the new academic year. Their dedication often goes unseen, but it is deeply appreciated. Thank you for all that you do.

As always, I finish this term feeling immensely proud of our students and all they have achieved. I wish everyone a happy, restful and enjoyable summer break.
