Assisted Places/Bursaries
We are able to offer some assistance with fees to allow any girl to benefit from the education on offer at Kent College. These assisted places/bursaries are based on a declaration of family income and an interview with parents. For further details please click here.
Academic Scholarships
Academic scholarships, worth up to 10% of day fees are available each year at 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry.
Two months prior to the examinations, information regarding the entrance procedure is sent to those parents whose daughters are registered. The examination papers for scholarship and non-scholarship candidates are exactly the same. At 11+ entry, a number of potential academic scholars are identified, based on those who achieve the highest marks in the entrance examinations, perform well at interview and have a good reference from their present school. These girls are recalled for further assessment and interview, and scholarships will then be offered. We do not guarantee that all recalled candidates will be offered scholarships.
The 11+ entrance/scholarship examinations consist of our own entrance tests in English and mathematics. Girls will also sit a computer based test which covers literacy, numeracy and non-verbal reasoning. The computer based test is part of a national project run by University of Durham and is used by a number of independent schools nationally. It is recommended that all girls complete the online demonstration test, which can be found at http:/www.intuproject.org/CEMDemo/entrance. All schools remain anonymous to each other; however, if your daughter has taken/or will take the same test at another participating school then we will be given the results of all tests, including the one taken elsewhere.
Details of the examinations can be accessed by clicking on the link below:
The 13+ entrance/scholarship examinations consist of our own entrance tests in English, mathematics, verbal reasoning, French and science. Details of the examinations can be accessed by clicking on the links below (PDF files):
For A-level candidates, scholarship examinations are held each November and consist of two subject papers of the candidate's choice, and one general paper covering general knowledge and current affairs. Kent College students in Year 11 are eligible to apply and compete with external candidates.
Music Scholarships
Application for music scholarships is usually by recommendation of a student's current school. Music scholarships can be worth up to 10% of tuition fees and are available each year to candidates entering at 11+, 13+ and 16+. Students can apply for a combination of no more than two scholarships.
11+ candidates should have reached a practical standard equivalent to at least Grade 3 in one instrument/voice with a second instrument/voice at a lower level.
13+ candidates should have reached a practical standard equivalent to at least Grade 5 in one instrument/voice with a second instrument/voice at a lower level. 16+ candidates should have reached Grade 7 in one instrument/voice with a second instrument/voice at a lower level. At 13+ a letter of application from each candidate to Mrs Huang and the Director of Music, Mr Kent-Davies is also required.
Kent College students in Year 11 (for 16+) are eligible to apply and compete with external candidates.
Each candidate will be expected to perform a prepared piece on each study and will also take part in an interview and practical activities. Theory qualifications would be an advantage. Music scholars are expected to make a significant contribution to the musical life of the school.
Drama Scholarships
Application for drama scholarships is usually by recommendation from a student's current school. Drama scholarships can be worth up to 10% of tuition fees and are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+.
Students can apply for a combination of no more than two scholarships. At 11+ and 13+. Drama candidates will be required to prepare beforehand and perform on the day a poem and an extract from a play chosen by the drama department and take part in a group session which will include text based tasks and responding to direction from a member of the drama department.
All candidates will also be interviewed by the Head of Drama. Audition pieces are available from Kent College when you apply for a scholarship.
At 13+ a letter of application from each candidate to Mrs Huang and the Head of Drama, Mr N Ashton is also required.
At all levels we are looking for innovative, original performers who will make a significant contribution to the school's theatrical productions.
Art Scholarships
Application for art scholarships is usually by recommendation from a student's current school. Art scholarships can be worth up to 10% of tuition fees and are available at 13+ and 16+ entry.
Students can apply for a combination of scholarships and can apply for no more that two.
Successful applicants will demonstrate not only the skill to produce sound observational drawing, but also the ability to work with creativity and imagination. Above all, candidates should have a real commitment to the visual arts and enthusiasm for the subject that will be readily transmitted to others.
At 13+ and 16+ a letter of application from each candidate to Mrs Huang and the Head of Art, Mr A Dixon is also required.
Kent College students in Year 11 (for A-level) will be eligible to apply and compete with external candidates.
Sports Scholarships
Application for sports scholarships is usually by recommendation from a student's current school. Sport scholarships can be worth up to 10% of tuition fees and are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+ entry.
Students can apply for a combination of no more than two scholarships.
Applicants will initially be assessed in two sports and will have a short interview with the Head of PE and PE staff.
11+ candidates are required to provide a portfolio of their sporting achievements to date and a letter of recommendation from their current PE teacher and coach (where applicable). We are looking for excellence in either one sport or all-round ability in two or three. These should be taken from the main sports offered at Kent College: swimming, netball, hockey, tennis, dance, gymnastics or athletics.
A letter of application from each candidate is also required.
If your daughter wishes to be considered for a different sport/physical activity then please discuss this with us before applying as we may not be able to consider an application if we are unable to offer the sport at the school. Candidates recalled for further assessment will have the opportunity to demonstrate their chosen sport.
Kent College students in Year 11 (for A-level) will be eligible to apply and compete with external candidates.
Duration of Scholarships
11+ scholarships are usually valid for seven years. All 13+ scholarships are usually valid for five years and 16+ scholarships are usually valid for two years.
Acceptance of a scholarship is taken as confirmation of the parents' intention to educate their daughter at Kent College through to the completion of her A-level studies. Scholars in sport, art, drama and music are normally expected to take these subjects to AS level or, where they do not, to contribute significantly to the life of the school in that area e.g. through representing the school on teams. The school reserves the right to review scholarships at any time.
Results of Entrance & Scholarship Examinations
Parents are notified of the results of the entrance and scholarship exams within three weeks. All parents whose daughters are offered scholarships or places are asked to let us have, as soon as possible, an indication of their intention to accept either our offer or a grammar or other school place once the Kent 11+ school offers are announced in March. Our final deadline for acceptance of places and scholarships will be one week after this date.
The Margaret James Society

The Margaret James Society
The Margaret James Society, was founded in 2010 in memory of our former Headmistress, to add breadth and depth to the academic experience of the scholars of Kent College. Every academic year there is a series of topical and academic lectures given by visiting guests or teaching staff. In the last academic year, scholars have enjoyed lectures from authors, art historians, the Science and Classics departments.
Overseas Applications for Scholarships
We can arrange for overseas pupils to sit academic scholarship papers in their own country. However, unless applicants are able to attend the school for assessment and interview we are unable to consider overseas applicants for sport, art, music and drama scholarships. For more information on overseas applications, please see International Students |
