REUNION AT KENT COLLEGE – MAY 2007 by Joan Anderson (Stringer) KC 1955-59
For the second year running I went to the reunion just wondering if I would enjoy it as much as the first visit. I wasn’t disappointed – even though there was not a lot new to see from my previous visit. Work in the entrance to KC completed with inner doors replaced by glass automated ones and new reception area. The Organ room had been re-decorated and reorganised – still very much in keeping with the architecture of the room with the panelled walls and window shutters still in place.
The Annual General Meeting was held here, as usual, with reports from the Head girls and deputies telling us of their achievements, not only academically but in sport, music and arts; of the excursions, holidays and adventures during the past year. This was followed by Mrs Anne Upton’s report which would be her last one to us. Next year there will be a new Head. Finally, Sue Boulden gave a humorous speech and presentation to Lynette in honour of all her hard work and improvements to the magazine over the years. All this was followed by lunch – the most important part!!.... for this is where all the chatter, meeting up and reminiscing goes on. It was good to see Miss Sage again – still keeping in touch with all that KC has to offer.
Pegeen Hamilton-Hunter came all the way from the Isle of Man – this was her first visit in almost 50 years! We walked around the grounds and buildings together chatting about the “ups” and “downs” of our KC days – members of staff we could remember and the strict timetable and routines we had. It all seemed a far cry from what happens today. The new 6th Form accommodation has a kitchen in which is provided food to help themselves to, washing machines and dryers to do their washing anytime (different from our once a week change of clothes and laundry days!). The ‘dorms’ had 3 or 4 beds but each area was partitioned off with shelving and work base areas for computers/music centres giving a certain amount of space and privacy; no shared wardrobes and a small chests of drawers for the them! Gone are the communal bathrooms – instead lots of private shower rooms – just as it should be. In place of the “common room” a pleasant lounge area and a Pool table!
The day finished with tea before saying our farewells. I travelled back with Marian (Webb) who kindly gave me a lift part of the way home to a station for my onward journey back to the Isle of Wight; our reminiscences and comparisons of boarding school life made interesting conversation. It’s funny how things, years later when discussed together, bring a different perspective to how these things were perceived originally. Looking forward to the next one!
