Meet the Teachers

 

Name: Kay Saunders.

Qualifications: CChem, MRSC.

What is your role at KC? Head of Chemistry.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? All matter is made of chemicals, so the importance of chemistry is that it's the study of everything. I love the practical work and it’s great to hear the ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ when the girls carry out an experiment!

What made you decide to be a teacher? I had spent nearly 25 years working as a Research Scientist for an agrochemical company when I opted for a career change. So I decided to use my skills and knowledge to interact with children and teach them how amazing the world of science really is.

Passions/hobbies: Travelling, Walking .

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Something to do with wildlife and conservation.

What are your interests outside of school? Visiting Castles, Churches and Cathedrals. Gardening.

 

Name: Catherine Noyek.

Qualifications:  BA Honours 1st, PGCE.

What is your role at KC? Dance teacher.

What do you enjoy most about your subject?  Choreographing for the school shows and exam work.

What made you decide to be a teacher?  It is a great way of continuing to dance as I got older.

Passions/hobbies Theatre of all kinds, yoga and running.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? An adventurer, a nurse or a yoga teacher.

What are your interests outside of school? My kids and family and travelling.

 

Name: Daren Lee

Qualifications: Psychology BSc/ Special Education: Psychological Perspectives MSc, Counselling Cert.

What is your role at KC? Teacher in charge of psychology and the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ).

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Its diverse nature and contribution towards individual, organisational and societal issues.

What made you decide to be a teacher? Despite my plans, a preferred specialism did not materialise while undertaking my undergraduate studies so I really "fell into" teaching. Nonetheless, 16 years into my career I still enjoy the act and process of teaching.

Passions/hobbies? Going to the gym. I enjoy boxing, weight training and playing football. I also enjoy keeping up to date with psychological research and, of course, dog walking.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? An ethically minded professional footballer but, given my modest ability, I would have to say that a practising psychologist would be a more realistic option.

What are your interests outside of school? Counselling psychology. I am currently undertaking a doctorate in counselling psychology in London one and a half days a week.

 

Name: Rachael Howlett

Qualifications: BSC Psychology, MA Education and Leadership

What is your role at KC? Teacher in Charge of Sociology

What do you enjoy most about your subject? How current news and social policy changes are so important in Sociology, making every years teaching current and interesting.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I enjoy working with young people, and seeing them grow to their full potential.

Passions/hobbies: I enjoy swimming

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? A counsellor

What are your interests outside of school? Doing lots of different activities with my children.

 

Name: Nigel Ashton.

Qualifications: BA (Hons) PGCE.

What is your role at KC? Head of Drama.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Productions

What made you decide to be a teacher? A teacher at my school.

Passions/hobbies: Opera, theatre architecture, gardening, interior design

Name: Becky Leach

Qualifications: BSc (Hons) Applied Statistics, PGCE

What is your role at KC? Assistant director of studies

What do you enjoy most about your subject? The discussion of whether Mathematics is invented or discovered.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I love helping others and maths.

Passions/hobbies: crochet, reading, running, history of Mathematics,

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Pharmaceutical Statistician

What are your interests outside of school? Local history, walking

 

 Name: Dr Nick Trainor

 Qualifications: LLB (Exeter), DPhil Politics (Oxford)

 What is your role at KC? Teacher in Charge of Politics

 What do you enjoy most about your subject? Politics is forever interesting. New problems arise year on year, and new solutions are always needed.

 What made you decide to be a teacher? I have always valued the contribution of young people in my own life. They often offer new perspectives on old problems. In addition, I thoroughly enjoy helping students grow in their own understanding of the political world around them.

 Passions/hobbies: With my wife, I am a very keen long distance walker and backpacker. We keep hens, have several dogs, and a menagerie of children of our own. What more can a man ask for?

 If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? A midwife

 What are your interests outside of school? I am writing a science fiction book. It has often be overwhelmed by other of life’s demands, but I hope to pursue it further as things settled down over the coming years.

 

Name: Joanna Smith.

Qualifications: BA (Hons) + PGCE.

What is your role at KC? Head of Maths.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? I love that maths is all about solving problems, using logic and playing around with puzzles.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I wanted to be in a profession that helped other people to be the best person they can be.

Passions/hobbies: I love art, life drawing, linguistics and learning about why and how things work – and my daughter, Evie.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? I think I’d really enjoy being an art detective – doing some detective work about paintings – are they real or fake?! (It’s a real job – I promise!)

What are your interests outside of school? I love hanging out with my daughter, and singing and dancing (when hopefully no-one is watching!)

 

Name: Katharina Pater.

Qualifications: MA, PGCE.

What is your role at KC? Head of German.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Opening up a new world that understanding another language brings with it, sharing my culture.

What made you decide to be a teacher? Sharing my knowledge.

Passions/hobbies: Music, playing cello and piano, reading, exploring the world around me.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Something to do with music.

 

Name: Claire Lusher

Qualifications: BA QTS

What is your role at KC? Head of Food Technology

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Nutrition, food science, problem solving and investigative work.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I used to work in advertising and it made me feel empty. I wanted to do something useful which would empower other people.

Passions/hobbies: I’m a qualified practising reflexologist. I enjoy reading, walking, creating art, visiting galleries and going to the theatre. I’m also a trained mindfulness teacher and foster carer.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? A full time reflexologist and foster carer.

What are your interests outside of school? As above.

 

Name: Nicola Worsfold

Qualifications: BA in History.

What is your role at KC? Joint Head of History.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? I love the scope of topics History offers, such as the variety of themes within the subject itself. I enjoy considering different interpretations about events in History and learning about how they have been formed.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I became a teacher after working as a nanny for years while studying History at university and chose to be a teacher as it gives me the opportunity to combine working with children while continuing my own learning and understanding, which can never be complete.

Passions/hobbies: My passions and hobbies are my children, who take up most of my time. We like to be outdoors, visiting my fathers farm, camping, dog walks and any adventures that come our way. In addition I enjoy the cinema, reading, keeping fit and the rare quiet times.

If you weren't a teacher, what would you be? If I was not a teacher I would work for a charity, most likely for homeless people or a Social Worker.

 

Name: Elizabeth Thacker

Qualifications: BA Classical Civilisation, MA Ancient Visual and Material Culture, PGCE History

What is your role at KC? Joint Head of History

What do you enjoy most about your subject? So many things - examining evidence, analysis, argument. Making connections between the past and the present. Finding the stories that aren't always told. Unusual knowledge that comes in handy for Pointless....

What made you decide to be a teacher? Love of the subject and love of working with young people. I wanted to help people to come to a better understanding of how the world we live in today came to be, to discuss and debate issues that matter, and to be critical of sources of information we are presented with.

Passions/hobbies: Reading, walking, being outside, cooking, music, making things.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? An education officer in a museum or a nurse.

What are your interests outside of school? I'm a Guide leader with Girl Guiding UK and that involves a varied range of activities - camping, singing, crafting, cooking, DIY... I also sing in a choir when I get the chance, and make much use of my English Heritage card.

 

Name: Andy Dixon

Qualifications: BA (hons) Fine Art , PGCE

What is your role at KC? Head of Art and Photography.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? The fact that there is no "right or wrong" with my subjects.

What made you decide to be a teacher? When I was at school you were not taught how to draw, I wanted to put that right for the current generation.

Passions/hobbies: I enjoy challenges with my own Artwork, "capturing the moment" through photography, Rock concerts, film posters, monty python and red wine.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Travel documentary cameraman.

What are your interests outside of school? Travel, skiing and hiking in the Scottish Highlands.

 

Name: Susan Waller

Qualifications: BA(Hons) MCLIP

What is your role at KC? Librarian and Head of Learning and Life Skills Subject Group

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Helping the girls find just the right book for them and seeing them become enthusiastic readers

What made you decide to be a librarian? The smell of new books is addictive! Seriously, I have always loved libraries, beginning with the wonderful visiting mobile library when I was a child.

Passions/hobbies: Line dancing, reading, travel and learning something new every day

If you weren’t a librarian, what would you be? Something in the caring professions

What are your interests outside of school? As above

 

Name: Helena (Nel) Levett

Qualifications: BA(Hons) English lit/ drama - Leeds; MA contemporary fictions of conflict - York; PGCE; Cert Nat Sci; PGDip (SEND); NASCO; CPT3A (BPS member).

What is your role at KC?  Head of Enhanced Learning and SENCo (Whole School).

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Giving the girls the confidence to say 'I can do....' and the tools to achieve beyond expectation.

What made you decide to be a teacher? As a lifelong learner myself it was a natural move to stay in the wonderful world of education.

Passions/hobbies: Gardening, building, walking, exploring, cross-stitch and reading.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Geological photographer.

What are your interests outside of school? Passtimes and hobbies as above; supporting charlie and sarah in their activities; lovely friends; yomping in the woods; renovating our new home and garden.

 

Name: Anthea Church

Qualifications: BA Oxon English Literature; PGCSE Birmingham

What is your role at KC? Head of English (though only until December)

What do you enjoy most about your subject? The opportunity it gives to continue studying literature closely, in particular poetry.

What made you decide to be a teacher? Teaching runs in my blood. I come from a family of art and English teachers and I came to it instinctively and with great pleasure.

What are your interests outside of school? Journalism/writing. I am also interested in working with the elderly. I am a devoted fan of silence during which I read, run, write or do yoga.

 

Name: Nicky Denton

Qualifications: BSc 2:1 Loughborough University Exercise and Sports Science and QTS.

What is your role at KC? Head of Senior School PE.

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Seeing the girls active and accomplishing goals both big and small.

What made you decide to be a teacher? I love to watch others learn and develop new talents and also the summer holidays!

Passions/hobbies: Running, swimming, my kiddies and reading.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Forensic scientist or a midwife.

What are your interests outside of school? Spending time with family and friends .

 

Name: Ana Nieto

Qualifications: BA Honours Madrid PGCE Institute of Education, London

What is your role at KC? Head of Spanish and Head of MFL

What do you enjoy most about your subject? I love the cultural element of teaching languages. Spanish is spoken by more than 400million people all around the world with may different traditions and cultures. I love being able to introduce and discuss these in my lessons. 

What made you decide to be a teacher? I love languages and I am passionate about the importance of learning them as a young person. Although it's never too late!

Passions/hobbies: I enjoy cooking and travelling. 

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? Anything that involved travelling and getting to know new people.

What are your interests outside of school? I am a keen reader and cook.

 

Name: Barbara Mitchell

Qualifications: BA (Hons) Theology - University of Durham; PGCE – University of London; MA Inter-faith Dialogue – University of London; Diploma in Jewish-Christian Relations – University of London; Post-Graduate certificate in Philosophy and Ethics – University of London

What do you enjoy most about your subject? Visiting different places of worship and meeting people of a variety of faiths

What made you decide to be a teacher? I love my subject and want to share what I learn with others.

Passions/hobbies: Needlecraft and reading as many books as I can.  Country walks with our black Labrador, Mungo.

If you weren’t a teacher, what would you be? A travel writer or journalist.

What are your interests outside of school? Being a Vicar’s wife – helping run parish activities and singing in a traditional church choir (lots of Thomas Tallis motets).
