Introduction to Admissions

Welcome

We are delighted you are considering Kent College Pembury for your daughter.

Kent College is a day and boarding school for girls aged 3 to 18. It is a Methodist School which forms part of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust that welcomes girls of all faiths and none.

The aim of the school is to offer girls a wide and exciting academic education. The school is selective, but not narrowly so, taking into account interests and a diversity of strengths.

As a Methodist school with a Christian ethos, Kent College has a policy of accepting students with a range of abilities, from those who are very able to those with mild learning difficulties to those who have gaps in their knowledge due to interrupted schooling. We are able to do so because we provide a high level of individual attention through small classes and close monitoring. In addition, our Learning Development Department co-ordinates individual learning programmes for girls who are having extra lessons when, for example, they are taking extra or early GCSEs, or filling gaps in their knowledge. As a result of these measures, examination results are impressive and compete favourably with local selective schools.

In the Senior School our main intakes are at Year 7, Year 9 and Lower Sixth Form. We also accept applications from students for entry into other year groups subject to places being available.

Visits

There are many opportunities to come and see us.

We strongly recommend, where possible, that prospective students and their parents visit the school to meet the headmistress, staff and students, and to see the facilities. Visits are recommended in the two years prior to entry and we advise you to contact us well in advance to avoid disappointment.

You would be welcome to attend one of our Open Mornings which we hold on a Saturday in October and during the week in March. We also have smaller Open House events on a weekday morning throughout the year. You are very welcome to visit with your daughter or you may prefer to come yourselves in the first instance.

You can also arrange an individual visit with the Registrar when you can have a full tour of the school on a normal school day and meet with the Headmistress.

Applications

It is never too early to apply!

If you would like your daughter to be considered for entry to Kent College, please complete and return the Application Form together with a non-refundable registration fee of £100 (if applicant's parents live in the European Union) or £150 (if applicant's parents live outside the European Union). Payment can be made by cheque, debit card or bank transfers. One form and fee is required per student.

You can print a copy of the Application Form to be completed and posted with a Payment Form and cheque, or Apply Online.

Application does not constitute an offer of a place; once we have received your form and fee your daughter will be held on our registrations list and you will be informed about entrance examinations at the appropriate time.

Taster days

Where possible, we offer prospective students the opportunity to spend a 'Taster Day' at Kent College. This enables the girls to take part in lessons and activities, and gives them a better feel for the school. Prospective boarders are invited to stay overnight.

Admission arrangements for the academic year 2020-21

For entry in 2020, and in line with our ethos of growing intelligence and nurturing potential, Kent College has developed a new approach to testing for admission at all levels.

Entry to Year 7 and Year 9

The deadline for applications is Wednesday 16th October 2019 and applying girls will automatically be registered to take our tests.

Registered girls are invited to take part in our Year 7 Entrance Day on Saturday 16th November 2019 with Year 9 entrants invited to take part in our Year 9 Entrance Day on Monday 25th November 2019.

Girls applying to join Kent College in Year 7 should be registered by the beginning of the Autumn Term of the year preceding entry, if not before. A report and reference from the candidate's current school will be requested in advance of the Entrance Assessment Day.  All external candidates for entry into Year 7 and 9 will sit computer-based, nationally standardised cognitive ability tests. Girls will also take part in a range of activities during the day designed to showcase their attitude to learning and they will participate in a group interview. Where applicable, offers of places will be made within two weeks of the entrance assessments.

Academic scholarships will be awarded on the basis of the tests taken on Entrance Assessment day and parents will be informed of any scholarship by the end of the Autumn Term.

Practical scholarships in the Arts (Art, Drama, Dance, Music) and Sport will be assessed on separate days during the Autumn Term and parents will be informed of scholarship awards by the end of the Autumn Term. Please see the Scholarship section of this website to see the range of scholarship opportunities available.

As a guide, we expect successful general entry girls to achieve an average score in nationally standardised tests sat before entry to Kent College Pembury.

Entry to the Sixth Form

Applications to the Sixth Form will be considered at any time during the year, however the following deadlines should be noted:

Deadline for applying for a Sixth Form Scholarship – Wednesday 16th October 2019

It is expected that Year 11 girls will continue into the Sixth Form, subject to their achieving appropriate grades in their GCSE examinations.

External candidates wishing to be considered for the remaining places in the Sixth Form should register by the end of the Autumn Term in order to guarantee that they are able to study their chosen A Level options. References will be sought from their current school and candidates will have an interview with either the Deputy Head Academic or the Head of Sixth Form.

Entry requirements are at least 6 or more GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, with Grade 6 or above in the subjects being pursued at A Level or subjects related to the chosen subject. in addition, students are expected to achieve a Grade 7 or above in Maths and the Sciences if students wish to pursue these subjects at A Level.

Ad Hoc applications

Applications are welcome for entry to other year groups where we have capacity. Please check availability with the Registrar before proceeding.

Applications will be assessed using a combination of CAT tests and English and Maths papers and a reference will be sought from the current school.

What's next?
To formally accept an offer of a place we would require a completed Acceptance Form, Parent Contract and the deposit. Upon receipt of this, your daughter's place would be secure. Closer to the point of entry a New Joiner Information Booklet and Forms for Completion will be sent to you in the post/ or by email with any other ad hoc paperwork required prior to entry.
