Physical Education

The School has an excellent reputation for sport and the academic year 2003/2004 was a tremendous year with many notable achievements, including the U14 relay team becoming national champions and the U13 hockey team being placed 2nd in Kent (see list below for more details).

Sport at KC is about developing a fit and active lifestyle, team spirit and learning a variety of energetic pursuits. Whatever their ability, students have a huge range of sports to choose from including team sports like hockey, netball, rounders, basketball and football, as well as racquet games, athletics, cross-country, water sports, horse riding, trampolining, dance and self-defence. Through enjoyable and challenging experiences all girls develop a positive attitude towards physical activity, gain a sense of achievement and build self-confidence.

The wide choice means students can usually find something they enjoy and at which they can try to excel. There are opportunities to participate in House and inter-school matches, local, county and national events.

Facilities include netball, basketball and tennis courts, hockey pitches and athletics track, 20m indoor heated swimming pool and dance studio. A new £1million sports hall was opened in November 1999 and officially opened by Olympic gold medallist Roger Black. It is a large well-equipped sports hall which has proved to be an invaluable facility for badminton, netball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, indoor hockey, gymnastics and trampolining.

Outside of P.E. lessons, further opportunities include jazz dance, Taekwon-do, horse riding, trampolining, tennis coaching and life-saving.

Sports scholarships worth up to 50% of tuition fees are available to able candidates at 13+ and 16+ entry.

A Tremendous Year for Sport at KC . . .
Academic Year 2003/2004

It was a tremendous year for sport at KC and we congratulate the girls and staff on their efforts and achievements. Our teams regularly compete against schools which have two or three times more pupils than KC, which makes our achievements even more notable. The following is a summary of the key highlights:

Athletics

The U14 relay team became national champions when they won the National Preparatory Schools Athletics Championships on 5th July held at Birmingham. In other U14 events we KC students won: 4th in discus and 4th in shot putt. In U13 one of our girls came 8th in 100m and another was 7th in discus.

KC Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in the Kent Preparatory Schools Athletics Championships in June, held in Ashford. They achieved fantastic results, winning gold medals in 6 events and 5 bronze medals.

14 out of the 29 selected from local schools for the Tunbridge Wells District Athletics Team were KC girls. The team competed at the Kent Schools' Championships at Ashford and our girls were placed as follows:

INTERS: Lucie M - 1st (800m) and qualified to represent Kent in the National Schools' Championships. Rachel C - 2nd (high jump), Sarah H - 7th (1500m).

JUNIORS: Portia C - 3rd (discus), Annabel G - 3rd (javelin), Sian L - 4th (javelin), Robyn S - 5th (javelin), Harriet G - 8th (shot putt).

TSB Athletics Cup:

KC Juniors in Years 7 & 8 (pictured) won the Kent round, qualifying for the south-east regional final in which they finished 2nd, winning silver medals.

KC Intermediates in Years 9 & 10 (pictured) narrowly missed qualifying for the south-east regional final but went on to
win the Kent Schools' Athletics Cup, plus £100 of vouchers for athletics equipment.

Tennis

Four teams from Year 7 took part in the U12 Benenden School Tennis Tournament in June. The girls pictured beat Marlborough House in the final to win the tournament and brought home gold medals.

Hockey

The U13 team were 2nd in the Kent County Hockey Tournament beating Sevenoaks School but losing in the final to fellow Methodist school Kent College, Canterbury.

Running

Lucie M, age 14, ranked 1st in the Kent U15 Cross-Country League in the autumn term 2003. In the summer 2004 she came 1st in 800m in the Kent Schools' Championships, which qualified her to represent Kent in an inter-counties competition; she won this having competed against the best in Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and Buckinghamshire. Lucie may now be selected to run for Kent in the National Schools' Championships. Her fast time of 2:19.6 minutes represents a performance well inside Grade 2 of the UK Athletics Common Standards and very close to Grade 1, an incredible performance since, at age 14, she is competing at under 17 level.

Netball

· U12 team came 5th out of 48 teams in the
Kent County Netball Tournament.
· U12 team reached the semi-final of the
Kent Prep Schools' Tournament.
· Katie M and Rachel B were selected for the
Kent U18 Netball Squad.

Swimming

Outstanding swimmer, Emma age 17, has been going for gold in the
Kent County Swimming Championships in summer 2004. She won eight gold medals and two silver in the individual events and two gold, a silver and a bronze in team relay events; the gold winning teams also broke two county records. In the Southern Counties finals she has been placed 2nd in the 200m freestyle, 5th in the 100m freestyle, 6th in the 200m individual medley, 7th in the 50m freestyle and 8th in the 100m fly. Nationally for her age group, she now ranks 16th for 50m freestyle, 18th in the 200m freestyle and 23rd in the 100m freestyle.

Kent College won all of our inter-school galas and remain undefeated. Four Year 7 girls and one Year 5 pupil, swam at the finals of the National Prep Schools' Competition in Wolverhampton. In the finals; Abigail D came 5th in the 25m butterfly and Harriette G came 6th in the 50m freestyle.

Rounders

The U13 rounders team played in the St Bede's School Tournament, finishing 2nd. Sian L was awarded the St Bede's Batting Shield.

Riding

The riding team qualified for the National Schools' Championships.

Skiing

For the first time we entered a team in the Kent Schools Ski Championships slalom race at Chatham. Out of 140 competitors our girls were placed 13th, 15th and 17th. The A team finished 4th and the B team came 7th overall. One pupil stayed to race in more relays and her team won gold medals overall.
