Mathematics
Mathematics is taught as a core subject from Year 7 through to GCSE
level then as an optional subject at A-level. The school follows
the Impact Maths series at Key Stage 3 and uses the Edexcel GCSE
Mathematics books at Key Stage 4. It combines traditional and investigative
approaches in teaching styles.
GCSE Mathematics
(Years 10 & 11) - There are four parts to the syllabus covering: Using and Applying Mathematics, Number Work and Algebra, Shape Space and Measurement, and Probability, Data Handling and Statistics. Examination results are consistently high.
A-level Mathematics
(Lower and Upper Sixth) - the course is modular allowing students some flexibility in choosing from Pure Maths, Statistics and Mechanics modules. Available as an AS-level (one year) or A-level (two year). The AS-level would be suitable as a support for science subjects or to provide a contrast to other subjects. The two year A-level course is an essential part of most scientific careers, as well as to those involved in business and economics.
A-level Further Mathematics
(Lower and Upper Sixth) - Further Mathematics is offered at AS or A-level for able candidates who achieve grade A* or A at GCSE. The course structure is similar to that of the Mathematics course with different, more difficult topics included.
The department enters for four Maths Challenge competitions each year and several students have also been invited to take part in British Mathematics Olympiad and International Maths competitions. The department runs a Puzzle Corner with problems set each week. |
Head of Department, Mr Bayliss, is responsible for the school's
computerised integrated learning system, Successmaker.
All girls in Year 7 and some older students use the programme in
Maths and English lessons to improve their numeracy and literacy
skills. Successmaker is an exciting programme which:
- Gives constant feedback and encouragement to the individual
- Provides regular reports for staff to monitor each girl's progress and then adjust the course as necessary
- Sets targets for individuals
- Marks the work instantly
- Explains how the student got things wrong

Successmaker
Research has shown that Successmaker highly motivates students and regular usage can lead to a year's improvement in just four months. Departmental staff award certificates to celebrate student progress. Girls can continue using Successmaker throughout the school and can access the system in their own time via any of the campus-wide computers. For those keen to make the most of the system there is a supervised Successmaker Club.
