Information Technology

IT is an integral part of learning at KC and students have access to over 100 computers which are networked around the school in classrooms, the library, Sixth Form Centre and boarding houses. Each student has her own email address and space on the network where she can store files. All the computers are networked providing Broadband Internet access and CD-ROMs. All computers have Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access etc) plus curriculum software and typing packages. The Music Department use their computers for composition.

Years 7, 8 & 9 - all students have IT lessons as well as using IT across the curriculum. In Year 9 students achieve external computing certificates awarded by NICAS (National Inter Action Award Scheme) in a range of Microsoft applications.

Students have the option to continue IT during Years 10 and 11 when they work towards achieving a GCSE in Business and Communications Systems.

GCSE Business & Communication Systems (Years 10 & 11) - This GCSE option gives students the opportunity to study IT in a business context. Coursework includes the use of databases, spreadsheets, word processing, desktop publishing, email, web browsers and web authoring. Business practice, people in the workplace and the use of communication systems in business are also studied.

A-Level I.T. (Lower and Upper Sixth Form) - Kent College now provides IT education through to A-level. This option enables students to complete both theory and coursework units which include designing an IT solution for a real end-user e.g. setting up a spreadsheet system for a small company, and lokking in detail at how Management Information Systems are used in businesses today.
