The School
Kent College is an independent girls' boarding and day school with
a Senior School (ages 11-18) and Prep School (ages 3-11) sharing
the same site. Founded in 1886 by the Wesleyan Methodist Schools'
Association, today Kent College is an interdenominational Christian
school welcoming girls of all faiths and backgrounds.
Since 1939 the school has been located on a 75-acre
site, surrounded by beautiful green countryside on the outskirts
of Royal Tunbridge Wells in Kent, a safe and rural part of south-east
England. The campus comprises an elegant Victorian manor house and
architect-designed modern facilities, including boarding houses,
sports hall, theatre, music school, science laboratories, Sixth
Form study centre, and an indoor heated swimming pool.
The school is committed to a continuous programme
of development and developments in recent years have included:

A multi-media laboratory
with 22 PC-based workstations in an air conditioned room. Used predominantly
by modern languages students.
A £1 million state-of-the-art theatre,
providing a modern, flexible venue for performing arts with seating
for up to 360. Computerised lighting and sound equipment is operated
from a control room, by a team of trained students.
A large well-equipped sports
hall which was officially opened by Olympic gold medallist
Roger Black.
The
dining hall has been
extended and refurbished, providing a light airy space for pupils
and staff in both schools to eat lunch and where all boarders have
their meals.
The Sixth Form study centre
was upgraded and refurbished to provide more study rooms, a larger
common room with kitchen and networked IT facilities.

The IT facilities are continually
being added to and upgraded. Additional interactive Smart Boards and
computer projectors have been added to classrooms to enhance teaching
methods, and additional colour printers, scanners and digital cameras
are available to students and staff. We also now have broadband internet
access.
The has been an ongoing refurbishment programme for the boarding
houses.
A new general science laboratory
has been opened.
New subjects have
been added to the curriculum including AS/A-level ICT, Food Technology,
PE, and Product Design:Textiles.
The current roll in the Senior School is 365, with an additional 190
girls in the Prep School. Day girls come from a wide area of Kent
and Sussex and weekly boarders from London and the south coast. Full
boarders are welcomed from all over the world and their differing
cultural influences enrich the experience of all students.
Kent College places a strong emphasis on extra-curricular activities
and fosters an ethos of participation. Girls follow a balanced programme
of academic work and activities to build up a strong Record
of Achievement, necessary for successful university and employment
applications.
Kent College is a successful
school with an excellent
reputation. As well as a continually improving academic record,
the school is well known for high standards in drama, music, sport
and art. In March 2001 a professional research consultant was employed
to interview 12 heads of local preparatory schools whose pupils
regularly progress to KC at age 11 and 13. The research project
found that the "quality
of care was considered better at Kent College than at its rivals
by every feeder head."
In May 1996 the school won the West
Kent Business of the Year Award, and in July 1997 achieved
the National Investors in
People standard for staff development, which was re-awarded
in July 2000 and 2003.
The
assessor's report stated that "the
school shows exemplary practice in the way it recruits new teaching
staff" and that there was "no
hesitation in stating that Kent College continues to meet the National
Standard."
Staff commented that the school was a "stimulating
place to work" and "very
supportive." The report also stated that "all
staff felt there was an equality of opportunity for training within
the school."
In
May 2002 the school received a national Sportsmark
Award from Sport England, in recognition of our commitment
to physical education and sports provision. Sport has gone from
strength to strength and the academic year 2003-2004 was a tremendous
year for sport with many individual and team achievements, including
the U15 relay team becoming national
champions at the IAPs National Athletics Championships and
the U13 Hockey team being placed 2nd
in Kent.
